Hawthorn falls under the City of Boroondara, which has some of Melbourne's strictest tree protection rules under its Local Law on Neighbourhood Amenity.
Canopy trees with a trunk circumference of 110cm or more (measured 1.5m above ground) require a permit before removal or significant pruning — regardless of species.
